I Lost My Confidence: How Do I Get It Back?

If you've lost confidence in yourself, don't worry. As you'll soon see, you can easily learn how to get your confidence back.

But before you start doing that, it's helpful to understand why you lost self confidence in the first place, so that it doesn't happen again.

Why did I lose confidence in myself?

If you've lost self confidence, it's because you don't think as positively about yourself and your capabilities as you once did.

More specifically, if you lost confidence in yourself, 3 things happened:

To understand this, let's say that you're an extremely self confident person who doesn't struggle with self doubt in any way.

Indeed, you know without a doubt that you are a great, important, valuable person, just as you know without a doubt that you can achieve anything you want to achieve.

But then, one day, your self confidence takes a blow when you begin doubting your positive value and your capablities for the very first time.

For example, maybe you lose your job, and then the love of your life breaks up with you soon after.

You want to know why these things happened, and this is when you start doubting your self worth and your capablitiies for the first time, by thinking thoughts like:

  • Maybe I'm not as great, or as important, or as valuable as I thought I was
  • Maybe I'm not capable of achieving things I want to achieve
  • Maybe I'm weaker than I thought
  • Maybe I don't have as much to offer the world as I thought
  • And so on...

This type of self doubt and negative questioning is the first step in an erosion of self confidence.

Continuing with our example, let's say you begin doubting yourself and your self worth after your lose your job and the love of your life breaks up with you.

When you start doubting yourself like this, a loss in self confidence predictably follows. After all, from 'Maybe I'm not as valuable as I thought I was' it's not not much of a leap to start thinking 'I'm not that valuable'.

And when you start thinking that type of a thought, that's when you officially lose confidence in yourself.

So think of it this way: the moment you began doubting yourself and your capabilities, your confidence begins to waver.

Then, the moment you begin to actually think less positively (or negatively) about yourself and your capabilities is the moment that you actually lose confidence in yourself.

In this way, self doubt is a slippery slope that naturally leads to a loss of self confidence.

It's common to conclude that losing your job and being dumped by your lover are things that cause you to lose confidence in yourself.

But these things do not cause you to lose self confidence at all. Instead, it is a negative change in the way you think that causes a loss of confidence.

To understand this, imagine  that you lose your job and the love of your life breaks up with you...

But, rather than doubting yourself or your capabilities in any way, you maintain the rock solid conviction that you are a great, important, valuable person no matter what happened, and you also know without a doubt that you will emerge from this situation stronger than ever.

With this approach, you continue to feel good about yourself and your capabilities, and you maintain your self confidence, despite these recent events.

The lesson: external events outside your mind do not cause a loss of confidence. Rather, it is a negative shift in thought that causes the loss of self confidence.

Without this negative shift in thought, you can easily stay self confident no matter what.
